Periodic Homogenization with an Interface: the Multi-dimensional Case
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider a diffusion process with coefficients that are periodic outside of an ‘interface region’ of finite thickness. The question investigated in this article is the limiting long time / large scale behaviour of such a process under diffusive rescaling. It is clear that outside of the interface, the limiting process must behave like Brownian motion, with diffusion matrices given by the standard theory of homogenization. The interesting behaviour therefore occurs on the interface. Our main result is that the limiting process is a semimartingale whose bounded variation part is proportional to the local time spent on the interface. The proportionality vector can have non-zero components parallel to the interface, so that the limiting diffusion is not necessarily reversible. We also exhibit an explicit way of identifying its parameters in terms of the coefficients of the original diffusion. Similarly to the one-dimensional case, our method of proof relies on the framework provided by Freidlin and Wentzell [FW93] for diffusion processes on a graph in order to identify the generator of the limiting process.

Periodic Homogenization with an Interface: the One-dimensional Case
We consider a one-dimensional diffusion process with coefficients that are periodic outside of a finite ‘interface region’. The question investigated in this article is the limiting long time / large scale behaviour of such a process under diffusive rescaling. Our main result is that it converges weakly to a rescaled version of skew Brownian motion, with parameters that can be given explicitly ...
متن کاملHomogenization of Periodic Multi-dimensional Structures: the Linearly Elastic/perfectly Plastic Case
In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour via Γ-convergence of some integral functionals Fε which model some multi-dimensional structures and depend explicitly on the linearized strain tensor. The functionals Fε are defined in particular classes of functions with bounded deformation while the limit problem is set in the usual framework of Sobolev spaces or BD(Ω). We also construct an exam...
متن کاملAn Algorithm based on Predicting the Interface in Phase Change Materials
Phase change materials are substances that absorb and release thermal energy during the process of melting and freezing. This characteristic makes phase change material (PCM) a favourite choice to integrate it in buildings. Stephan problem including melting and solidification in PMC materials is an practical problem in many engineering processes. The position of the moving boundary, its veloci...
متن کاملAcoustic Wave Propagation in a Composite of Two Different Poroelastic Materials with a Very Rough Periodic Interface: a Homogenization Approach
Homogenization is used to analyze the system of Biot-type partial differential equations in a domain of two different poroelastic materials with a very rough periodic interface. It is shown that by using homogenization, such a rough interface can be replaced by an equivalent flat layer within which a system of modified differential equations holds. The coefficients of this new system of equatio...
متن کاملMultigrid Method for Periodic Heterogeneous Media. Part 1: Convergence Studies for One-dimensional Case
A multi-grid method for a periodic heterogeneous medium in 1-D is presented. Based on the homogenization theory special intergrid transfer operators have been developed to simulate a low frequency response of the differential equations with oscillatory coefficients. The proposed multi-grid method have been proved to have a fast rate of convergence governed by the ratio , where depends on the mi...
